| Dr. Mir N. Islam, after completing a Masters in Biochemistry & Nutrition from Dhaka University, studied for his MS & Ph.D. in Food Science at Louisiana State University with a fellowship from Ford Foundation. He taught 28 years at the University of Delaware (USA) and joined FSU-Panama in February, 2011 as an adjunct Professor of Nutrition. He is a world-renowned researcher and a professor in the field of Food science & Nutrition. During 1989-90 he spent a sabbatical as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. While at Delaware, under the sponsorship of organizations such as US Agency for International Development, National Science Foundation, and Inter-American Development Bank he carried out scientific assignments in Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and Puerto Rico. During 2001-2003, Dr. Islam directed two IDB-funded projects in Panama on tropical fruits & phytochemicals through the Ministry of Agriculture and the University of Panama. Currently, in addition to his teaching responsibility at FSU-Panama, he has been serving as a consultant for several organizations involved in nutraceuticals & degenerative diseases. He has 70 professional publications/presentations and 1 U.S. Patent. Dr. Islam is on the Advisory Board of the Electronic Journal of Environmental, Agricultural and Food Chemistry. His leadership roles include serving as Chairman of the Asian American & Pacific Islander Caucus at the University of Delaware, President of the Delaware - Panama Partners of the Americas. , and the Home Owners Association of the Villas of Palm Beach. Florida.. He has been appointed as a member of the Florida Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Council, for a 4-year term beginning September, 2010.
